At what point does this start to receive the “bro truck” type of hate? I’d put money down that most of these never see anything more intense than a maintained dirt road. Granted they aren’t nearly as big nor obnoxious as a “bro truck”

Now. Right now. The smoker shades on the windows just pushed it over the edge.
In terms of a tweaked Subie’s variance from the
norm
, this is arguably worse than a Brodozer on a
relative
basis. But a Brodozer starts at a disadvantage because it’s almost always an obnoxious truck to start with.

I’m a fan. Our Outback is slated to go to college with my daughter. When she’s done with it, I hope to bring it back and “prep” it.

It’s the stupid little lights at the top of the hood that push this one over the top of me.

I’ve had that hate (but in a mocking way) for awhile now. These are such a PNW stereotype in any form that I just can’t do it. Less offensive than a brotruck or Jeep/4Runner/Taco wearing too much pseudo-masculine jewelry, but still just dopey.

Maybe if it was in an area where these aren’t a cliche, but in the PNW, I wouldn’t be able to look at it, it is almost like a parody. The stickers, the lights, the rack - I’ll wager the driver is a transplant from CA or the midwest, too.

I didn’t even notice. Ugh. I’d much rather see a sleek light bar in front of the rack, or even some big round Hella/KC lights on the grille.

When the mods aren't functional, but that's not the case here, even if the light placement is questionable. Besides, as soon as someone goes the bro truck route, they almost universally become an asshole on the road. I've yet to see that with Offroad builds of road cars

The smoker shades are so you can crack the window in the rain. May look dorky, but they're an absolute godsend in Seattle.

On the flip side, go to any trailhead, any forest service road, and gravel pathway within an hours drive of Seattle and you'll see nearly endless Subarus in all levels of kit. I wouldn't be surprised if there are more of these off the road than there are jeeps in Washington. At least by total percentage

I know a bunch of people who own Subarus and are constantly using all of their free time for camping, hiking, biking, skiing, kite boarding, etc, but don’t have any of this pseudo-masculine jewelry. I see brobarus all the time, but never see dirty ones and never see them parked at trailheads or anything like that. I call bullshit on 99% of these. The owners are asshats. People who actually do outdoorsy shit spend their extra money on outdoorsy shit because it's expensive. A stock Subaru will get you to any trailhead just fine. A modded Subaru still can't off-road better than a RAV4.

I don’t doubt the functionality. Down here, they’re the difference between the interior being 100 degrees or 140+ degrees on a summer day. But I think I see about one of out 1,000 cars with them, and it’s always a questionable person/car.
I will say that at least these seem to match the door frame pretty well and don’t look generic.

Good point, but I think being less of a pavement queen than a PNW Jeep isn’t saying much. Most of those trailheads and gravel paths c ould be navigated by my fintail, or at most, a 2WD pickup. These are virtue-signaling lifestyle accessories as much as practical vehicles, especially when loaded up with bric a brac . Maybe I am a little too harsh, but I at least group them along with pointless tuned Euro SUV variants cruising the mean Stepford-filled streets of Bellevue or BOF SUVs driven by shouty sports parents with 2.1 kids between facilities and big box stores in Woodinville and Mill Creek.

having threatened to go down this mod path myself before I came to my senses all I can say is - why? On the scale of roadworthy to offroad worthy most Subaru’s already strike the right balance. Better tires, a skid plate or two and more cargo storage (if needed). Done. Don’t mess with it more.
The way I look at it is a roadworthy score and an off-road worthy score.
lets call it 1-10 for each (more points, more worthy)
A standard outback is 8 RW, 4 ORW - 12 overall
A modded outback like this goes 6 RW and a 5 ORW - 11 overall points
i.e. the further you press a highly road worth car into off-road worthy territory the worse you make it overall.
On the other side of the coin is something like a 4runner.
Stock offroad model 4 RW, 7 ORW - 11 overall points
modified off-road model, 3 RW, 9 ORW - 12 overall points.
i.e. when you take something that wasn’t very road worth, but very off-road worthy and you push it further into its comfort zone you diminish its road worthiness very little while greatly enhancing its strengths and increase its overall value as a daily and as a tool for fun.

I'd allow lights too, as someone who desperately needed more for nighttime rallyx even after upgrading to 7" LED rounds.

yeah, lights are good for anyone. When you upsize tires, get lifts, load it to the brim with overland bling...you pretty much ruin it.

Subaru sells these window shades/covers directly with the chrome top to match with the window surround that would otherwise get covered up, I guess. Unless I find myself sleeping in the car a lot and needing to crack the window in rain , I would rather not have these. Although I suppose that low speed crawling might mean turning of A/C (the horror!) making these beneficial, and thus completing the bro-baru look.
I assume that ditch lights on the hood also are theoretically important in certain circumstances, but I’ve figured that a light bar at grille level should do a good job, too, but I guess that doesn’t help if the car is turning into the ditch . . . which one is unlikely to do in a Subaru, really.

This. I did it way back when it wasn’t such a thing. It ruins axles, ball joints, and plenty else. If you actually push them you’ll overheat the shocks, fatigue mounting points, etc.
The cars aren't built for it. They're commuter cars with pretend bits.

yeah, a few jeeps, 4runners, some pickups but subies for days... R eally nice variety too - old beat up Outbacks and Loyales to brand new, fully kitted Crosstreks, Outbacks and Ascents.
